Gardening Volunteering Opportunities at Petersham House

You don't need to have a qualification to apply, but some gardening experience is useful.

So if you have an enthusiasm for all things green and wish to learn about the beautiful borders, or pick up new skills from pruning to mulching, please do get in touch.

Volunteers are provided with Teahouse lunch.

Petersham House Garden (adjacent to Petersham Nurseries) is the private garden of the nurseries' owners Francesco and Gael Boglione. Sitting amidst the Thames, Petersham Meadows and Richmond Park, Petersham House is a hidden English garden in Greater London.

Broad lawns are surrounded by extensive yew hedging and wildly established Hawthorne hedging. A generously planted 150ft long herbaceous border starts the year with a vivid display of bulbs gradually changing to almost overgrown late summer floral beauty. The borders built around a loose structure of permanent planting, including Romneya, Macleaya, Rheum, Eupatorium, Veronicatstrum, Irises and Oriental poppies.

The season is prolonged with early spring flowering bulbs, including Tulips and Alliums, and extended into late summer and autumn with Aconitum, Asters and grasses along with annuals and dahlias.

A kitchen garden supplies the house and Petersham Nurseries Café and Teahouse with salad leaves, edible flowers and herbs, whilst a newly cultivated and productive vegetable garden sits among a young planted orchard, home to both beehives and chickens.

Each year Petersham House Garden opens to the public to raise funds for charity and many come to visit and meander around the garden.

Throughout the year Petersham House offers opportunities to volunteer within the garden and work alongside the talented and knowledgeable gardeners.

Petersham House are currently looking for a handful of dedicated volunteers to join the team for the coming season, to assist with a variety of jobs throughout the year including:

  • planting, staking, weeding, pruning and mulching amongst other general gardening tasks.

This year we will be welcoming volunteers every Wednesday starting from September and we usually ask that our volunteers commit to joining throughout the season to help us create a cohesive and dedicated group, learning alongside one another.

If volunteering for the whole season is too much to commit to, we offer short term positions during the autumn, when we begin to put the borders to bed for the winter and embark on our annual bulb planting marathon, getting nearly 10,000 bulbs planted for amazing spring displays.

To find out more, or to come and meet the team, email our Head Gardener: edward.parkinson@petershamnurseries.com

We will be in contact with applicants as soon as we can.
