PBS COMMUNICATION PRACTICE LEAD
£19,800 per annum (£16.92 per hour) | 22.5 hours per week
Flexible working pattern across the week
Help autistic people to be understood, heard and supported to communicate in the way that works for them.
The Kent Autistic Trust is looking for someone with a passion for accessible communication to take a Trust-wide role in developing communication practice across our services.
You might already be an autism practitioner, senior support practitioner, communication champion, or have experience using Makaton, AAC or visual communication approaches and be ready to take the next step in your specialist career.
You do not need to be an established PBS practitioner. What matters is your understanding of autistic people's communication needs, your ability to adapt approaches to the individual, and your confidence in supporting others to develop their practice.
What you'll be doing
Working as part of our multidisciplinary PBS team, you will:
- Develop personalised communication approaches and resources.
- Support the effective use of Makaton, AAC and visual communication.
- Develop Communication Passports and other practical communication tools.
- Coach and support staff to embed good communication practice.
- Deliver communication training and build confidence across our teams.
- Work alongside families, PBS and other professionals to ensure communication is embedded in everyday support.
What we're looking for
We're particularly interested in people who have:
- Experience supporting autistic people and/or people with learning disabilities.
- Experience of communication approaches such as Makaton, AAC, Widgit or visual communication.
- The ability to adapt communication to individual needs.
- Confidence in coaching, supporting or training colleagues.
- Good organisational, IT and written communication skills.
- An understanding of PBS, or an interest in developing their knowledge.
Don't be put off if you don't meet every element. We're looking for the right communication experience, values and potential, with opportunities to continue developing your specialist knowledge.
Why join KAT?
- A specialist role with the opportunity to influence communication practice across KAT.
- Support from an experienced multidisciplinary team.
- Ongoing specialist training and development.
- A varied and rewarding role across different services.
- Flexibility over how your 22.5 hours are worked across the week.
- The opportunity to make a real difference to how autistic people are understood and supported.
Location: Working across KAT services in Kent, with travel between services as required. A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle are required.
Interested?
If you have strong experience of autism and communication but aren't sure whether you meet every aspect of the role, we would still encourage you to apply.
